"It becomes understood that happiness is not dependent on circumstances being exactly as we want them to be, or on ourselves being exactly as we'd like to be. Rather, happiness stems from loving ourselves and our lives exactly as they are, knowing that joy and pain, strength and weakness, glory and failure are all essential to the full human experience." - Kristin Neff

Hello and welcome,

I am Amanda Ahmed (She/Her), and I look forward to meeting and getting to know you, your experiences, values, and struggles. I understand that struggling is a part of being human, and unfortunately, some have more difficulties than others based on what has happened to them. Still, I also understand how painful it is to struggle alone. I am here for you. I believe the foundation of change and healing lies within a safe, trusting, and respectful relationship. Developing a genuine and authentic relationship is essential to my practice.

People tell me that I am a warm, compassionate, non-judgmental, and supportive individual. I believe in empowering the strengths that those I work with hold. I am a person-centered, humanistic, and emotions-based counsellor, drawing on many methodologies and focusing on working collaboratively with my clients on their goals and tailoring treatment to their unique needs. I believe my clients hold the solutions to their struggles within them; my role is to help draw them out.

I come to my work as a counsellor with over 13 years of experience as a Mental Health Registered Nurse working in complex contexts and with diverse people who experience complex trauma, family conflict, cultural stress, substance use, marginalization, and homelessness. My experience has influenced my trauma-informed, anti-oppressive, and culturally safe approach when working with individuals. This includes offering a 2SLGBTQIA+ Safe Space.

My special interest includes but is not limited to, helping helpers (both professionals and non-professionals) and those with relationship challenges, anxiety, depression, stress, burn-out, family conflict, parenting and challenging life transitions.

I have specialized training in Narrative Therapy, Narrative Exposure Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Harm Reduction, Mindfulness, Yoga, mental health pathology and psychoeducation. I also have had extensive supervision with influences of structural family therapy, internal family systems and emotions-based theory. I incorporate bits from many of these models into my practice.

I am a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying) with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO). I practice as an intern who receives supervision from Yoshie Martinez and Yena Bi. I have completed my coursework for a Master of Counselling Psychology degree at Yorkville University. In addition, I hold a Baccalaureate of Nursing Science from the University of Ottawa and am currently registered and working with the College Nurses of Ontario.

When I am not working, I enjoy spending time with my blended family and our pets and being in nature. I am passionate about the balancing and healing properties the natural world provides. Additionally, I acknowledge I am doing this work on the traditional land of the Algonquin people. As a 2nd generation settler to this land, I have a deep respect, gratitude, and commitment to learning from the Indigenous peoples of this land and the land itself.

I look forward to meeting you,
